Debunking 4 Common Myths About Auto Repair Shops

November 20, 2023

To get the best return on your transportation investment, it's best to schedule regular maintenance and auto repair services. Fortunately, there should be at least a few reliable service providers in your area no matter where you are. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the automotive services field employs more than 730,000 people in the U.S. alone! As large as it is, some myths remain regarding the industry, so let's debunk four of the most common ones.

1. All Automotive Services Are the Same

Many car owners don't consider where they take their vehicles for maintenance and repair services. They either go to a dealership or the nearest automotive services facility, all under the impression that there's no difference. The notion is completely false for a lot of reasons, not least of which include differences in staffing and available services. Some have certified technicians and current diagnostic equipment while others might not. Some also specialize in certain types of services, such as exhausts, tires, transmissions, and drivetrains.

2. Recommended Maintenance Schedules Waste Money

Virtually all owner's manuals come with recommended service intervals for those vehicles. The service intervals are based on the expected service lives of the parts, fluids, and other materials that enable different mechanical systems to work. They also are intended to lessen the need for eventual auto repair by obtaining more affordable preventive maintenance services that enable your vehicle to run well and remain reliable and safe to drive.

3. Accurate Quotes Are Available by Phone

You can get a general idea of the cost to do certain types of maintenance and repairs at an auto shop, but you can't get accurate quotes. You only would get an accurate estimate if there were no complications such as hidden damage or defective parts yet to be discovered. Only after a mechanic runs diagnostics and gets a close look at the work to be done will you get an accurate quote. Anything else is just an educated guess.

4. You Should Expect Unnecessary Recommendations

Many people make the mistake of thinking auto repair shops always try to run up the bill by suggesting additional work that isn't needed. That's not always the case! There are many shops out there that do honest work, only recommending what's needed to ensure your vehicle is mechanically sound and safe to drive. Unscrupulous shops generally go out of business quickly, so look for experience to find the most reliable providers.
