4 Ways to Tell You Need Car Repair

April 22, 2024

The automobile is the most effective form of personal transportation ever created and is very popular in the United States. According to Forbes, nine out of 10 of the nation's households have at least one vehicle. Those vehicles need maintenance and repair work. If you're unsure about your vehicle's need for a mechanic, here are four ways to tell that you need car repair work done on your vehicle.

1. The Engine Idles Roughly

The motor should run and idle smoothly with no misses or unusual vibrations. When you're stopped at a light, you might notice the engine running roughly and stumbling. Giving it a little gas might smooth out the idle, but it also raises the RPMs and increases your fuel consumption. A rough idle is a sure sign of the need for car repair that might just be as simple as needing a tune-up service done.

2. Your Fuel Economy Worsens

A properly maintained vehicle should get its best gas mileage. As parts age and fall into disrepair, the engine will have to work harder to deliver the performance that you're used to getting from it. The harder the motor works, the worse the fuel economy gets. There's a long list of mechanical issues that might worsen your fuel economy, but the sudden rise in fuel consumption and costs is a sure sign that something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

3. The Vehicle Makes Unusual Noises

Your vehicle should start, run, and drive relatively quietly. There shouldn't be any sound other than the normal exhaust note that the engine produces. If you hear knocking, squealing, or other unusual sounds while driving, your vehicle is due for a car repair service. A bad belt, worn brakes, or a bad bearing might make loud and unpleasant squalling sounds. A defective shock, strut, or another worn suspension part might make knocking noises, or you might hear other sounds.

4. There's Fluid Constantly Leaking

Even when your vehicle is parked and not running, you might notice signs that it needs work. Leaking fluid is one of the most obvious signs and could occur due to leaking coolant, oil, or a transmission. A defective fuel line or brake line also might cause fluid to leak, which might make a puddle on the ground. When fluid leaks on the ground, your vehicle likely needs repair work.
